What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. He originally called his work “Contrology”. He defined his work as a way of completely unifying the mind, body and spirit.

His approach to movement was infused with the principles of concentration, control, center, flow, precision & breathing. Whether you are working on a mat or with Pilates equipment, these principles apply, creating intention and fullness to the each movement.

Pilates emphasises the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility & awareness.

A little about my Pilates journey…

I’m Bridgette, the owner of Bids Pilates. I started my pilates journey back in 2005, going to private classes with a wonderfully encouraging Pilates instructor (Kate) who inspired me to become a Pilates instructor myself. As a mother of two young children at the time, I incorporated pilates into my weekly fitness routine.

In 2014 I decided to follow my passion for movement and began with my studies to learn the Pilates method. I qualified and completed my international certification in both mat & equipment in 2015 with Trifocus and immediately began teaching, working at various studios on a part-time basis.

That same year I suffered a back injury which brought my pilates teaching career to a sudden halt. I was also an avid runner, completing at least 1 half marathon a month and enjoyed trail running too. I was told it would be too risky for me to continue without having spinal fusion & that I would not be able to return to my normal active lifestyle if I chose not to have surgery.

I went for a second and third opinion and based on this, I chose to rest and exercise to strengthen my back instead, (much of which included Pilates). I came back stronger than before – and without spinal fusion! This reinforced my belief that I could help and inspire others to discover their potential and heal through pilates.

After recovering I continued with instructing Pilates and completed a Bridging course with BASI (Body Arts and Science International) Pilates. I decided to further my studies by completing my MTTC (Mat teacher training course) with BASI pilates in 2017. In 2018 I completed – Pilates for Injuries & Pathologies – a course certified by BASI Pilates.

I believe that one can never know everything and to be a good teacher one needs to find a balance between humility, being quietly confident and still having the will to observe & learn from others. There is room to grow and learn every day!

A little inspiration…

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does!
